The Democracy Game Box (D-Box) includes eight printable analogue games, two of which are also available in a digital version. These games are an excellent way to build a bridge between theory and practice. They allow practitioners to create a stimulating and inclusive learning atmosphere and encourage learners to actively engage and interact with others.
The games are diverse in terms of duration and complexity. The alphabetical order below also approximately reflects the order of duration and complexity (starting with shorter duration and simpler game mechanics). Shorter and simpler does not mean less meaningful and complex in terms of democracy learning targets!
Every game comes with game material, a rulebook, and a chapter in the Demogames facilitator's manual (download as a package per game with the 'print&play' button). For some games, Demokrative is creating a handout for facilitator's interested in using the games in Switzerland (Demogames SwissEdition). Work-in-progress versions of the handout are available upon request (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).
The D-Box is the main output of the international project Demogames. Other outputs are the Demogames facilitator's manual and learning videos. Learn more about the project here.

Demokrative - initiative for political education was founded by eight enthusiasts in 2016 in a seminar room at ETH Zurich. Dr Rebecca Welge and Dr Sabine Jenni initiated the foundation to create a vessel for their first joint project in civic education, the Democracy Building Blocks.
From the beginning it was clear that many more ideas and people were looking for such a 'vessel'. For this reason, Demokrative was conceived and organised in a way that it can and should become a carrier, platform and network for other projects, initiatives and people.

Since its foundation, the association has slowly and steadily evolved. Important milestones were the first workshops with school classes in German-speaking Switzerland through the project Building blocks of democracy in 2017; the go-ahead for the Demogames project in autumn 2019; the expansion of the management board, the implementation of an office and the tax exemption due to non-profit status in 2021.
Today, the association has around 30 members, a five-member board, a small office team led by co-founder Sabine Jenni, and a handful of other volunteers who work on projects and in the administration of the association.
Instead of an office, Demokrative maintains the Demokrative Workshop, a virtual platform to save on administrative and fixed costs. The association's headquarters are in Bern.

Our vision is a vibrant and strong democracy in Switzerland, in Europe and beyond.
We understand civic education as education that has democracy as its theme and lives up to democratic values and principles.
Democratic values, Swiss democracy, innovative methods such as game-based learning, and current concepts such as the Council of Europe's Framework of Reference form our focus.
Demokrative is committed to action-oriented, scientifically based and democratic political education and thus contributes to the strengthening of our democracy.
The most important result of the international cooperation project is the Democracy Game Box with eight digital and analog educational games.
Practitioners analyze the practical teaching of democracy skills together with peers from the DACH region.
A concept and concrete guided modules for dealing with democratic principles and (value) controversies.
